Phobia Management
Many people experience fear, to
varying degrees, and it is generally accepted as a normal response. So, what turns
a fear into a phobia?
Well, with a phobia the fear far outweighs the treat and the
person affected has very little control over the way they react. Is that something
you can relate to?
People who suffer from a phobia see things differently to other people even when
experiencing the same situation, they will:
- Consider it more frightening, threatening and dangerous.
- Experience exaggerated levels of anxiety.
- Consciously avoid it.
So, if two people can experience the same situation in two totally different ways
how come there is such a difference in the reaction?
Our fears are as individual as we are so there is no definitive answer
that question. However, one common thread, based on the fact that the same situation
may lead to totally different reactions leads to a key fact in managing your phobia
that is summed up by a quote from Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, who said in the
first centaury AD: "Men are not disturbed by things but by the views they take of
them”
So, in it's most basic form Phobia Management consists of changing the way you view
the event that triggers the phobic reaction.

Origins of Phobia
The word 'phobia' is a derived from
the word 'phobos', meaning fear, and has its origins in Greek mythology.
Phobos was the embodiment of fear and
horror whose talent was to inspire fear and panic in his enemies.
No, Phobos wasn't a dentist even though,
for many of us, sometimes it may well seem like it.
They can certainly have the same affect
on us - or can they?
